About Corby Male Voice Choir

We, the Corby Male Voice Choir, are an enthusiastic organisation, now in our forty-third year and there is still one of the original founder members among our singers. Although many singers come from Corby itself, the catchment area is quite extensive. Our current membership of just thirty-four singers ranges in age from twenty-two to eighty-seven. We rehearse and perform throughout the year and, in recent times, we have performed an annual average of twelve concerts.

The highlight of our 30th Anniversary year occurred in October 2006, when we were one of fourteen choirs performing in London's Royal Albert Hall. The occasion was the biennial Festival of Male Choirs organised by the London Welsh Male Voice Choir. Singers from Australia, Canada, Scotland and Wales took part, together with the band of the Welsh Guards.

Our current repertoire includes songs from West End shows, popular music, songs of the sea, sacred songs, and music from operas. Recently we have added more contemporary music. As well as English, we sing German, French, Latin, Maori, Welsh and Zulu songs.

Though we are all committed to the music and the enjoyment of entertaining at the concerts, the charity fund raising element is taken very seriously. At the end of 2017, we had taken part in over 560 concerts and, in so doing, we have helped to raise over £303,000 for various local good causes.

The most recent changes to our choir have been the retirement of Andrew Torbell, our Musical Director and the appointment of our accompanist, Mrs Jan Williams to take his place as our Director of Music. Andrew’s retirement followed 37 years membership the last nineteen of which were as M.D. Jan joined us back in May 2011 and now, in her new role brings fresh enthusiasm for the future of our choir. Jan’s previous role as accompanist is now fulfilled by Mrs Kate Bidwell who is already proving to be a welcome addition to the front line team.

The Choir's 40th anniversary was on Tuesday, the 19th of January 2016.
